Frequently Asked Questions

What is 'Cook in a Book'?
Cook in a Book is a collection of your own recipes published in a professional format for you to keep, give away as presents or sell as you wish. It's also a great fundraising medium. Since lots of you love our books you have asked us to do calendars and cards as well.

What does the book contain?
The book is digitally printed on 100 gsm quality paper, is spiral bound with quality colourful funky plastic spirals (not horrible wire or that stuff you used to get in the office years ago) so that it opens out flat, contains an acknowledgement and introduction page, a table of contents and as many recipe pages as you want. It has a plastic 'wipe clean' cover to help protect it in the kitchen. The inside pages are normally mono whilst the front page is full colour on 200gsm card. Colour can be used elsewhere but it does increase the price.

What is 'a page'?
A page is one side of a leaf of paper. Normally, unless a recipe is very small it works out at one recipe per page. Each page is A5 size (210mm x 149mm). The covers are slightly oversize to protect the edges of the pages.

Aren't they a bit expensive?
When comparing value we would ask you to bear in mind that our quality covers do cost a little more than just card or lamination. They give the books a contemporary and practical finish; we feel they are well worth a little extra - especially when you consider the time and effort you may have put into your book. The price also includes all the preparation work and the production of proofs. We can produce books with less expensive card covers.

Can I see a copy?
You can see pictures of 'Cook in a Book' here.

Can I have my own cover picture?
Yes, you can submit your own picture(s) for scanning and inclusion. Mono artwork and photos can be included free inside (colour printing is extra). We also have some stock cover pictures if you are really stuck!

How long does it take to get my book published?
Well that's pretty much up to you. Once you have submitted your recipes (we aim to send you your draft within 7-10 days. We aim to send you your order within 14 days of you approving the proof. Normally we meet our targets but at certain times of the year (Christmas is hectic! -Ed.) we can get a bit pushed. If your order is likely to be delayed we will keep you informed.

Can I send my recipes by email?
Yes, especially as this reduces the potential for typographical errors. Please send your documents as attachments in text or Word format. We have produced a simple template to make sure you have included everything, but it isn't essential. We hope to be able to process orders via the web site soon.

What if my recipe book contains an error?
We try very hard to ensure that errors do not occur; which is why we ask you to approve a proof before printing. We cannot be responsible for minor errors of no consequence, or any errors that you have not noticed in the proof. However, if we have made a genuine significant mistake we will of course correct it for you. It is important that you, our customers, are happy with what is a very personal and special product.

Anything else I should know?
A couple of things you should check - firstly you should ensure that you do not infringe anyone else's intellectual property rights with your book (i.e. you can't copy someone else's work and pass it off as your own!). Secondly if you are ordering from outside the European Economic Community you may have to pay import duty. Please check with your authorities before ordering.

Do you accept credit cards and accept orders over the Internet ?
We used to accept credit cards but the costs have become prohibitive. We can also accept all orders by email. We can send you proofs and invoices etc. as .pdf documents.

Can I buy Cook in a Book for a friend?
Yes, as well as enabling you to print your own cookery book you can order a pre-paid gift box to give to a friend. All they have to do is submit their recipes and we'll do the rest.

Can I have a non standard book?
Yes, we work to your requirements. However, the format we use is probably the most cost effective; especially as we have the polypropylene covers made in quantities of 10,000 to make them cost effective.

Can I have more copies?
Yes. One of the main expenses in publishing any book is the initial set up charges. Once your book has been published we will keep it on computer disk for you.

What about payment?
Well to be honest we love having your money! However, we are happy to work at 'risk' until the point you are happy with the finished proof. At that stage we do require payment before producing your books. We are happy to accept official orders from organisations like schools and local authorities.

Do I need to type my text?
Originally we used to accept text in an format and indeed we still do. However, experience shows that the best way is to get your contributors to word process their recipes. See our advice page for more information. Typing by us is now charged extra.

You probably have a dozen questions as this can all seem a bit confusing.
To cut a long story short:

1. Send us your text
2. We prepare a proof
3. You say great
4. We say money please?
5. We print books, calendars or cards.
6. We send you the books
7. You sell books, calendars or cards and make money

The important thing is we NEVER require any payment until you are happy and we are ready to print your job! So you have nothing to lose.

Easy really! If you have any queries just contact us. We'd love to hear from you.
